(July 2015) As we often do in the heat of summer, last Sunday we headed for higher elevation. Carr Canyon is just south of Ramsey Canyon and a lot less crowded than Mt. Lemmon. For a second year in a row, we picnicked at Reef Townsite Campground near the top of Carr Mountain … elevation somewhere north of 7,000 feet. On a day when it was over 100 degrees in Tucson, we enjoyed mid-70’s, a pleasant cool breeze, and the sound of birds chirping in the pine trees. Stop at the Carr House on your way up. Learn a bit about the history of this area and check the accessibility of the road.
We recommend a high clearance vehicle. It is a one lane road with limited, narrow pullouts. Trailers and campers that are longer and wider than a Dodge Ram are not a good idea.
