Do Hummingbirds Hibernate?
Do hummingbirds hibernate? The answer is, yes, well sort of. Avid birders will already know the answer to this. I am not sure how I missed this fact all my life. Here’s the scoop.
When it is cold out, hummingbirds find a safe spot to perch, slow down their heart rate from around 250bpm to around 50 beats per minute. Their metabolism slows and they enter a state of Torpor.
When it warms the next day, they slowly wake, and fly off looking for food.
