Lupin or Lupine?
The Coulters Lupine or Lupinus Sparsifloris is a genus of Lupin or Lupine. Either name appears to be fine. The Coulter’s Lupine ranges from California, Arizona, Utah, Nevada and is found in Sonora and Baja California as well. The term Bluebonnet is usually saved for the Texas variety of Lupine. Apparently it can be distinguished by the Yellow “Banner” at the top of the plant, turning red after pollination. This one was captured sometime in late February several years ago with a less-than-stellar iPhone.
Looks like 2023 is setting up to be a good wildflower season.
