Dominick’s Real Italian: A Dining Review
Roy had not been well for many weeks and had lost 30 pounds. And was feeling frail and in need of something hearty to consume. In short, he wanted pizza. So I did our due diligence and picked a pizza joint with very good reviews. This was Dominick’s Real Italian in Marana at Thornydale and Cortaro Ranch Road. And it had the additional advantage of being only an 18-minute drive from our homes in the Tucson Mountains.
We arrived at about noon and the place was not crowded. We had our choice of seating. Our waitress took our drink orders. I ordered an IPA and Roy ordered his usual hot tea. As soon as the drinks arrived at our table, we ordered a plate of Calamari. It came out hot and very quickly. And it was delicious. Crispy the way Ms. Karen likes it. Sadly, she declined our invitation to join us, so she didn’t get any.
We then ordered our main lunch meals. Roy ordered the Meatlovers pizza. This included: pepperoni, spicy Italian sausage, Canadian bacon, meatballs, bacon, and extra cheese ($19.50).
I ordered Dominick’s Lasagna, which consisted of tender pasta layered with Italian sausage, pork, beef, ricotta, mozzarella, Pecorino Romano cheese, herbs, and marinara ($18.50). It came with a splendid salad and buttered rolls. A great combination, to be sure.
I’ll let Roy tell you about his experience.

Roy’s Meat Lovers Pizza.
“This week, we dined at a new-to-us Italian restaurant called Dominick’s Pizza on N.Thornydale Rd. It is in a shopping center where there is plenty of parking space. We were greeted at the door by staff who offered for us to pick a spot. Jim chose the back dining room where there is plenty of room. Menus were on the table. Our waitress was prompt and took our drink orders, which came promptly. I had my hot tea as usual. We ordered a plate of calamari, which came promptly. It turned out to be a large order accompanied by a small bowl of marinara sauce—delicious. Our waitress brought our orders. When my pizza arrived—I knew I was in trouble—it was 12 inches, piled high with the selected ingredients; meat lovers special, but with one glance at the mountain of goodies on it I knew I could not do it justice. As it turned out I was only able to eat one slice and took the rest home. I have never seen such a pizza. Not only here in Tucson, but back east in the heavily Italian areas of New England. I cannot gush enough about the quality and ingredients in one pizza pie. I award them 4 saguaros for quality and quantity of food, for atmosphere, and for service.”

Jim’s Lasagna.
My lasagna was excellent, but so large a portion that even I could not eat it all. So brought some lasagna and salad home to Ms. Karen. While Roy gives Dominick’s Italian only four Saguaros, I’m going to disagree slightly and give them an additional half-Saguaro. So Dominick’s gets four and a half Saguaros from Southern Arizona Guide. Good job, guys!
