Steinfeld’s Was More Than The Big Department Store Downtown
Some time ago, we published our review of Bettina O’Neil Lyon’s excellent Tucson history book entitled Zeckendorfs & Steinfelds: Merchant Princes of the American Southwest. Tina is the granddaughter of Albert & Bettina Steinfeld.
I was particularly interested because I learned so much about Downtown Tucson and its fascinating pioneer history. And I have now incorporated much of this new knowledge into my Tucson History & Libation Walking Self-Guided Tour.
Albert Steinfeld & Company was the largest and most successful department store in the Southwest for nearly 130 years. It was because of Tina’s book that I learned just how much more Mr. Steinfeld was involved in. The prestigious Pioneer Hotel. Mining, including the Copper Queen in Bisbee. Banking. And real estate. At one time, Mr. Steinfeld was the largest landowner in Tucson. He even had business interests in Tombstone during the Earp era.
Now (February 2020) I just came across this blog with photographs and a narrative about the many items Mr. Steinfeld made and sold. I thought you might enjoy it.
AZ BackCountry Adventures is a website by Ernie Parks. He chronicles his travels throughout the backcountry since 2003. There are a lot of adventures here for those that are interested in roadtrips and backcountry exploring.
