Sonoita To Garden Canyon Petroglyphs at Ft. Huachuca: A Day Trip From Tucson.
Update: January 2016. In 2014 the road to the petroglyphs washed out. It has yet to be repaired. Be prepared to hike a couple of miles if you wish to see them. Additionally you will need a pass to enter Ft. Huachuca, which you must obtain from what is now the Main Gate. We visited Fort Huachuca again in late 2015.
In early April 2013, I drove the back road to Ft. Huachuca from Sonoita to view the Garden Canyon petroglyphs. It’s a beautiful drive this time of year. The Fort has 2 fine museums, one related to the Buffalo Soldiers and the other to Army “Intelligence”. Today, Fort Huachuca is a very active military post. To get past the guards, you will need your drivers license, car registration and proof of insurance. You may also be required to show a second photo ID such as your passport.
Do get a map of the Fort from the guard when you enter. Otherwise, you will be perpetually lost in this maze.
