Sanctuary Cove: A Place for Reflection
OMG! Sanctuary Cove. I do not know why I had never heard of this place. What a magnificent place for hiking, reflecting, all things spiritual, including weddings, or just resting at a cottage on the grounds.
Nestled at the North end of Safford Peak, a.k.a. Sombrero Peak, the now 80 acre Sanctuary Cove, is a Desert Preserve and Event space here in Tucson. A private preserve, it is open to the public and aims to protect a small piece of our country for future generations. It is open to persons of all denominations, a place for reflection.
Sanctuary Cove and All Creeds, INC was founded in 1957 by Elmer Staggs, who originally lived where the now closed Lazy K Bar Guest Ranch is today. His idea was to save a piece of this beautiful earth where anyone can come and seek solace from the pressures of the modern world. Originally 120 acres, 31 acres was sold to Saguaro National Park in 1979. The parking lot here is a popular trailhead.
Friend Rosemary invited me to hike this place last weekend. What a treat! More about our hike later. I will have to do it again. If you go, please contribute $5 towards upkeep or choose to volunteer.
The cottage is available for rent, for a quiet stay or a group meeting. The amphitheater and chapel are available for small weddings in a perfect setting.
Easter Sunrise Service is the sanctuary’s largest event. We attended BC, (before Covid). Get up early.
Membership to the All Creeds Brotherhood is by application, or you can simply donate. Do visit this extraordinary place, hike the trails, be respectful, enjoy. Help keep this place for the future.
