Sally Visits St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery Near Florence
Our friend Sally from Sonoita and her husband Bryce recently visited St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery near Florence. We made a slideshow below of the photos they sent us of their trip.
Here are some thoughts that they shared with us about the trip.
“This past Sunday, Bryce & I stopped at St. Anthony’s Greek Orthodox Monastery near Florence, AZ. It was surprising to find this beautiful church and monastery in the middle of nowhere! It’s about 10 miles south of Florence and two miles off the highway.
Here, in the typical Sonoran Desert, is an oasis of lush greenery, palm trees, fountains, and beautiful architecture. There are several beautiful structures. One church, originally located in Greece, was taken apart, transported to Arizona, and rebuilt here at the monastery.
This and all the buildings and grounds are meticulously maintained. When arriving, if you have not planned in advance, women are loaned a floor-length skirt and a shawl to be respectful of the religion’s customs. You can wander on the flagstone walkways through the gorgeous grounds, and enter the buildings at will. All of the monks are helpful and kind. They don’t ask for donations, but of course, donations are welcome. This is a must-see for everyone!”
In her email to us along with the pictures, Sally stated, “We never knew this place existed and none of my friends, thus far, have heard of it. What a great place to visit and it’s free. Full of exceptionally nice people too.”
