Mei Mei’s Revisited: A Dining Review
Neighbor Roy and I had not been to Mei Mei’s since before the pandemic. We figured it was about time to go back in early April, 2023. Once seated by a slender, young Asian woman, we ordered drinks. Roy, as usual, ordered hot tea. I ordered Iced Tea with lemon. Very quickly she returned and we ordered lunch. First, I ordered crab puffs (10 for $5.99) and egg rolls (2 for $2.50) to share with Roy.
Then Roy ordered Beef and Broccoli with Lo Mein ($8.95). Usually, he takes half of it home for a “tomorrow” meal, but this time he ate it all.
I usually order Sweet and Sour Pork at any Chinese restaurant but decided on something different this time. Cashew Chicken with white rice ($8.99).
I’ll let Roy tell you about his experience.
“This week we dined at a west side favorite Chinese restaurant, Mei Mei Chinese Restaurant near St. Mary’s Hospital. It is in a strip shopping center on W. St Mary Rd. in the Safeway shopping center.”

“We were able to park in a handicapped parking slot outside the restaurant. We were met by a very friendly Chinese waitress who seated us promptly near the back. She presented a huge menu and resumed her duties. As in most Chinese restaurants, the menus are huge and it does take one a few minutes to digest its contents. I ordered a daily special of broccoli beef with lo-mein (8.95) and hot tea. When the dish arrived it included a bowl of egg drop soup. Jim had ordered and added a double order of egg rolls and crab puffs. Servings are quite large and with the addition of the egg rolls and crab puffs, I was pleasantly stuffed.”
“This restaurant is one of the older neighborhood Chinese restaurants in Tucson. I have eaten here for at least 30 years. It is not fancy, the service is good, and the food is above average, but it is a bit of a drive from the east side or north side.”
“I rate it as 3 1/2 saguaros as its inside is plain, but costs are quite reasonable.Where else could I get lunch, including soup, beef broccoli, lo-mein 2 small egg rolls for under $11.00.”
Mei Mei Chinese Restaurant is open from 11 am until 9 pm every day but Monday. There is no website but you can look at the menu and order Mei Mei Take Out here. They do a substantial takeout business as well.
I enjoyed my Cashew Chicken very much and especially liked the egg rolls and crab puffs dipped in Sweet and Sour Sauce. Like Roy, I rate Mei Mei’s Chinese Restaurant three and a half Saguaros. It isn’t much for atmosphere, but the food is really good and plentiful.
