Kingfisher Bar & Grill: A Tucson Dining Review
On a Friday in July 2021, Neighbor Roy and I went to Kingfisher Bar & Grill for lunch. If you have not heard, Kingfisher is the go-to seafood restaurant in Tucson. We had reservations and were immediately seated. The restaurant was not crowded. The tables had been separated, no doubt because of the pandemic for social distancing. The furnishings seem sparse, except for a beautiful and large bouquet of flowers in the center.
Our waitress poured each of us water and took our drink orders. Roy ordered his usual hot tea ($3.25) I ordered my usual, a margarita with salt ($9.75). When she brought our drinks, she took our lunch orders. Roy ordered fish & chips: Alaskan cod, beer batter, tartar sauce, malt vinegar, big fries, slaw ($17). I ordered their grilled fish sandwich: cilantro pesto, poblano, roasted peppers, white cheddar, shoestring fries, slaw ($14).
Our lunches arrived in a reasonable amount of time. My fish sandwich was excellent, tender white fish perfectly grilled on a fresh bun. I didn’t care for the shoestring fries and wished I had gotten some of Roy’s big fries. My coleslaw was just OK, but I’m used to Ms. Karen’s slaw which is much better.
As to Roy’s experience, I’ll let him tell you: “I had wanted fish and chips for some time–no better place than Kingfisher on Grant to indulge my quest. We were promptly seated–the restaurant was not too crowded for lunch, we were given water and menus–the lunch menu was extensive–first on the menu was my fish and chips which I promptly ordered along with a cup of hot tea.
Our drinks came promptly. Our lunch arrived shortly. My plate included 3 cod fillets deep-fried so as to crispen the outside and allow the fillets within to remain moist. There was a huge pile of fries and a serving of cabbage slaw–apparently made without mayonnaise which was quite good. Also on the plate were 3 small bowls of seasoning, a nice touch. Most restaurants usually only bring one. I found the meal to be quite good. Also, the service was quite good and would give it 3 1/2 saquaros.”
I too, give our Kingfisher lunch three and a half Saguaros. Great sandwich but the slaw and shoestring fries were not interesting.
