We three, Ms. Karen, Neighbor Roy, and I, dined at Gourmet Girls Bakery and Bistro, a gluten-free restaurant on Oracle in Tucson. I had not been there in years, but missed the place. I had called ahead for reservations and we were greeted by Susan, one of the owners. We chatted for a bit before our server came and took our drink orders.
Roy ordered hot tea, as usual. Karen ordered a hard cider, and I ordered iced tea with lemon. Karen took a sip of her drink and made a face, indicating that the 5% alcohol content was evident. Then we ordered lunch.
Karen ordered a quiche with clam chowder and a salad. Roy ordered a cordon bleu sandwich with clam chowder. I ordered the pulled pork sandwich with assorted fruit. Ms. Karen congratulated me for not ordering fries as she had put me on a diet earlier in the week.
Our meals were served promptly. Karen said she liked the quiche, loved the perfectly layered spinach. The salad was good, and was surprised and delighted that bacon bits were added to the clam chowder. Roy was more expressive.
"My impression of this restaurant is all positive. From the entry had the feeling of a family-type restaurant. Staff was warm and helpful, the Christmas decorations would cheer anyone. The menu was extensive--I selected the cordon bleu sandwich. The sandwich came in a wrapper to prevent loss of juices or stains on the hands, nice touch. I had my usual tea and was most satisfied with the meal, especially the bread which resembled a mid-eastern flatbread and was gluten-free. I passed on the desserts as am on a diet, otherwise I would have eaten more than my share. I give it 5 Saguaros due to combination of friendliness, menu choices, the little touches as the wrapper for sandwiches, and the family atmosphere."
Roy's take on the restaurant atmosphere and other details was copied by Ms. Karen and myself.
During our meal, Mary, the cook and also an owner, came to visit our table. We told her our food was superb and she went away pleased that we were enjoying our meals. We meant it. They were delicious.
We left with a Carrot Cake Muffin and box of Christmas cookies for later. Know someone who would like some cookies?
The Gourmet Girls gluten-free pastries are found in many restaurants about town, and they take special orders of most any kind. Gourmet Girls is not just for Gluten intolerant diners. It is delicious.
