University of Arizona School of Dance
The University of Arizona School of Dance announces its 2022-2023 season, the first under new Director Duane Cyrus.
Cyrus is only the second director in the school’s history, following the retirement of Jory Hancock.
“Taking on the role of director for the School of Dance at the University of Arizona is an exciting honor for me, and I look forward to delivering my vision for the school through excellent performances,” said Cyrus.
“The School of Dance has an exciting season of performances reflecting the exceptional dance training offered by our school. It is a vibrant time for the School of Dance, and I am honored to be leading such amazing talent.”
“Fall for Dance” (Nov. 3-6, 10-13) continues the Masterworks series with “Company B” by the legendary Paul Taylor. The concert also features a special collaboration with guest artist Juel D. Lane who will add a fresh perspective on contemporary dance with a commissioned work, “In a Flow,” curated by School Director Cyrus.
Lane is one of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch.” He has performed nationally and internationally with Ronald K. Brown/Evidence, and currently dances with Bessie Award-winning Camille A. Brown & Dancers. He has presented works on Ailey II, Dallas Black Dance Theater, Atlanta Ballet, and Carolyn Dorfman Dance Company. Earlier this month, Lane was selected as an Emory University Arts and Social Justice Fellow, a program that strives to reimagine existing courses and address social justice issues. Recently, Lane choreographed for The ACT Theatre production of “Choir Boy” in Seattle.
The second performance is “Arise | Student Spotlight,” (Nov 30 – Dec. 4) featuring choreography created by our dance majors.
