The Snake Eats Its Tail

The Joseph Gross Gallery is proud to present The Snake Eats Its Tail, a group exhibition exploring the nature of destruction in creation. This exhibition takes a particular focus on the act of consumption and the process of the circular movement by utilizing the mythos of the Ouroboros as a reflection on how the ancient illustration of wholeness is embodied in contemporary life.
As the 21st century continues forward and our society further embraces the circular nature of simultaneously embracing the roles of audience and performer, for example, in social media and internet practices; how do we and to what end, as information and content consumers, currently consume ourselves?
The Snake Eats Its Tail surveys a wide terrain of diverse mediums, ranging from sculpture, fiber works, mass-manufactured objects to photographic assemblage. Each of the pieces emphasize time-based processes and are sequential in nature to address the passing of time in form or content. The modes of self-consumption in the act of completing the whole, whether allegorically or physically, produce the final form of the works.
