Desert Pavement and Desert Varnish
Denise Bausch of the Imperial National Wildlife Refuge on the Colorado River in Southwest Arizona near Yuma defines desert pavement and desert varnish and their importance in desert environments. It’s an hour drive from Yuma, but if you want a true desert environment experience, check it out. Be sure to call ahead, and bring plenty of water. Temperatures in the summer can reach 120 degrees. Twenty miles from Blythe and a 2 hour drive from Yuma is Cibola National Wildlife Refuge protecting the Colorado River and its wildlife.
