Conde’ Nast Traveler recently published their list of the Top 25 Resorts in the Southwest. Four Southern Arizona Resorts were included. We too make dining & lodging recommendations. But we focus tightly on the Best Southern Arizona Resorts, not the vast Southwest. And our criteria are somewhat different, but not necessarily better.

Best Southern Arizona Guest Ranches: White Stallion

We were cruising Twin Peaks Road through the pass that separates the city from the desert when we happened across a sign that read: “White Stallion Guest Ranch”. I had read that this is one of Southern Arizona’s best guest ranches. We did a quick U-turn and followed the signs down the unpaved road for about a mile.

The Bar @ Ritz Carlton Resort – Dove Mountain

Recently, Neighbor Roy and I took off in search of the most expensive lunch in Tucson. We wanted to do our part to contribute to the under-performing Tucson economy. I am delighted to report that we found it. Or, to put it another way, they saw us coming. The Ritz Carlton is new to this area. I’ve stayed at a few over the years, and particularly enjoy the Ritz just south of Laguna Beach, CA. It sits magnificently on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a view of Santa Catalina Island 26 miles off shore. So I knew lunch at their new resort at Dove Mountain north of Tucson was not going to be cheap. Stables Grill at Tubac Golf Resort & Spa

April, 2011 Several of our friends rated Stables at the Tubac Golf Resort very good. So, last spring, when we were showing family the Missions, we stopped there to try it out. We four each ordered a different dish so we could compare. I summoned the manager, introduced myself and told him about the visitors guide we were developing. He explained that the owners of the Resort had just a few days earlier fired whoever was operating Stables, and the Resort was now in charge of the restaurant. Our food came and we all remarked on the delightful view overlooking the golf course with a small herd of lady cows and one massive bull wandering a fairway. Quite the hazard!
