Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant, Bisbee

The Bar at Santiago's Mexican Restauant, Bisbee.

Just about every time I have gone to Bisbee over the past year I have tried to dine at Santiago’s Mexican Restaurant. However, something always managed to spoil my plans…until last week.I had heard a lot of positive comments about Santiago’s as I wandered Old Bisbee taking photographs and talking with the natives. Now I know why. Just walking in the front door will put a smile on your face. The interior is light and colorful, even playful. Very Mexican in the best possible sense. Santiago’s is a happy place.

Table 10, Bisbee: A Dining Review.

Bisbee-Table-10_thumb

The best thing about the Inn at Castle Rock is not the funky, yet comfortable rooms, nor the rustic café, nor even the view from the balconies. No, not even its history. These are all well & good. But the best thing about the Inn At Castle Rock is Chef Hazel.

Cafe’ Poca Cosa

Cafe Poca Cosa

As noted several days ago with the Vivace Restaurant review, I occasionally post reviews by others I know well and trust their judgment in such matters. Scott Reed and his wife Sheryl are friends who visit us from Wisconsin in the fall or spring. This past April, they resided in our casita and enjoyed our [...]

Vivace – Fine Italian Dining

Vivace Italian Restaurant

Scott & Sheryl Reed are friends from Wisconsin who have stayed with Ms. Karen and me several times. Last year they dined at Vivace and thought the experience so exceptional they wanted to go again and this time write a review. With those I know to have discriminating tastes, I will occasionally invite them to [...]

Anthony’s In The Catalinas – Tucson Foothills

Anthony's Restaurant

We three arrived early just as Anthony’s was opening at 5:30PM. We entered through a small bar. The maitre d’ greeted us and I asked to be seated near the very large window on the south overlooking Metropolitan Tucson. On the way to our window table we took note of the large patio that would have been inviting if the weather had been warmer.

The Bar @ Ritz Carlton Resort – Dove Mountain

Ritz Bar Vertical 01

Recently, Neighbor Roy and I took off in search of the most expensive lunch in Tucson. We wanted to do our part to contribute to the under-performing Tucson economy. I am delighted to report that we found it. Or, to put it another way, they saw us coming. The Ritz Carlton is new to this area. I’ve stayed at a few over the years, and particularly enjoy the Ritz just south of Laguna Beach, CA. It sits magnificently on a cliff overlooking the Pacific Ocean and a view of Santa Catalina Island 26 miles off shore. So I knew lunch at their new resort at Dove Mountain north of Tucson was not going to be cheap. After a 40 minute drive from Downtown Tucson, we approached the lodge and both of us exclaimed almost in unison; “That’s the ugliest building in Tucson.” I’m sure whoever designed the exterior tried to … Continue reading

Cafe Roka – Bisbee

Cafe Roka, Bisbee

July, 2011 Is Cafe’ Roka the best restaurant in Baja Arizona? You decide. But I’ll tell you this little story. Mr. Woodry and I have been dear friends for well over 40 years. He was my first supervisor on my first job after I graduated. Since then we have traveled extensively together and experienced some of the finest restaurants in Los Angeles, New York, London, and Paris. One night, we stayed at the Copper Queen Hotel in Old Bisbee and made reservations to dine at what we were told was, not only the best restaurant in Bisbee, but the best restaurant in the Western World…Cafe’ Roka. To be sure, we had our doubts, but off we went with high expectations. I ordered lamb chops. Mr. Woodry ordered salmon. Both were artistically presented by an attentive waiter. The wine was excellent. Was it the best lamb chop dinner I ever had. … Continue reading

The Grill at Hacienda del Sol Guest Ranch – Tucson

Evening at Hacienda del Sol

July, 2011 Is the Grill at Hacienda del Sol the best non-Mexican restaurant in Tucson? I’m trying to think of where I have had a better dining experience and nothing comes to mind. But then, I haven’t dined at every Tucson restaurant yet. We’ll see… Executive Chef Evan Philips is a master. The veggies are picked fresh every day from the Andrew Weil Garden behind the kitchen. Dinner is accompanied by pleasant live piano music. Service is great. And the view of the mountains is specular. … Continue reading
