Southwest Wine Guide
Southwest Wine Guide is a website by Carol Wilcox and her husband Paul. They are Arizonans who, for the sheer joy of it, have for 30 years sought out the best California and Arizona wineries. They publish a blog about their travels and review selected wines they find along their way. I found their recommendations helpful, so was very please when Carol said I could share them with you.
Here’s a sample.
We discovered the Sonoita Arizona and Elgin wine area a few years ago and it has since become one of our favorite Arizona wine regions. It also inspired us to create this website!
Each time we travel to Sonoita Arizona and Elgin we find new tasting rooms with enthusiastic and hard working wine makers who are proud of the fruits of their labor. And they should be…in Sonita Arizona and Elgin you will find some of the finest wines we have ever tasted…all in our own “backyard.”
Three excellent tasting rooms are clustered together on Elgin Road: Callaghan Vineyards, Flying Leap Vineyards, (formerly Canelo Hills Winery) and Kief-Joshua Vineyard. Each is distinctly different from the other which makes it an even more pleasurable experience.
Other tasting rooms include Lightning Ridge Cellars on Highway 83 with a Tuscan-themed tasting room and Wilhelm Family Vineyards off Lower Elgin Road where Karyl Wilhelm will personally sign the wine bottles you purchase there.
There are many little places along the way in Sonoita Arizona and Elgin to stay overnight. About 40 minutes northwest of the Sonoita Arizona /Elgin area is the Village of Tubac and the Tubac Golf Resort and Spa. After a long and satisfying day of tasting delicious wines, we find this casually elegant property to be most relaxing, quiet, inviting and tranquil.
When I first contacted Carol, I was primarily interested in their recommendations for some of the better wines from Southern Arizona grapes. Here are a couple of their selections. Read More
