Sacred Sea: Ammonite Gourd Workshop

March 24 at 9:00 am - March 25 at 4:00 pm

The ammonite, a fossilized sea squid from Madagascar, makes a wonderful focal point when integrated into the body of a Southwest-grown canteen gourd. This piece features fretwork designed in a spiral form and articulated with pygmy date palm. Gourd artist Sue Brogdon leads students from marking the pattern and drilling the holes to coloring the body of the gourd, lashing the palm and lining the gourd with handmade paper, we’ll do it all! Instructor provides cleaned 9” diameter canteen gourd, ammonites in a variety of colors, dye inks, sealant, lashing needle, dyed and natural pygmy date palm and handmade paper. Students are asked to bring dust mask or respirator, old towel, cloth or plastic tape measure, latex gloves, pencil, bucket, scissors, mod podge, Loctite epoxy (instant mix/5 minute set time) and painter’s tape. In addition, if students have them, Dremel or power carver, ball cutting bur, wheel bur, Dremel brand brad point drill bits, cylindrical sanding burs, small diamond files, heat tool and electric drill with 1/16” bit.
